Islamic Republic of Iran with an area of 1,648,195 square km is located in the South-Western Asia and heart of Middle East; and as a bridge, it connects Caspian sea to Persian Gulf and now it is accounted as the leading country of science and technology among Islamic countries. This strategic political, cultural and geographical situation results in a superb position that culminates in a pole of transmission of voice and data in the region.
The communication activity in Iran commenced by setting up of the Ministry of Posts, Telegraph and Telephone in 1968. By expansion of its activities to all fields of communications, its name changed to Ministry of Information and Communications Technology in 2003 and thus entered into the new era of ICT.
This Ministry is officially presiding over ICT through the country, while the Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) as its executive arm supervises over the ICT field.
The high penetration rate of mobile phone, and setting up of optical fiber network across the country and inauguration of a new phase of a national network project of IP/MPLM, all are of attainments of Iran in the field of information and communication up to year 2016.
